Feeling more put together instantly is what I like to call, an indigo day. It’s the whole motto behind this entire blog. I truly believe that feeling a little more put-together does not have to be complicated or hard. And what you do may make you feel better, may not work for someone else and vice versa. These little tips and hacks can be a part of your beauty routine, your home, how you get dressed and everything in between. Some of these are tips that I personally swear by, and some are from the Indigoers of this community.
To share the best tips, I’m thrilled to start a five part weekly series featuring my best tips from style, beauty, life, home and hosting. Some of these tips are my own personal ones, and some come directly from Indigoers who read this blog. To kick the series off, let’s start with those easy and effortless style tips!
Here’s how to feel more put together with your personal style and outfits so you can make each day, an indigo day.
Style Tips To Feel More Put Together Instantly
Style Tips I Swear By
Add A Third Piece
To instantly feel like you have a complete outfit, add a third piece. This was a long-standing rule at Nordstrom when I worked there and I feel like it helped me style outfits so much better. A third piece can just be adding a belt to a dress. Throwing on a blazer or cardigan over your top and pants. Or adding a scarf to your look. It adds interest to your outfit and makes it feel more complete.
Do KonMari And Thank Me Later
The best thing I ever did for my closet and getting dressed, was KonMari. I worked with Bring Delight and she transformed my mindset and closet. You can see the step by step tutorial on how to do this on your own here. It reduced the quantity of stuff in my closet, while keeping the quality pieces I love and wear. Getting dressed is easier, shopping is less spontaneous (sorta, hard when you’re a fashion blogger). But overall, it makes me feel so much put together and my closets are so much more organized too.
Tie Your Espadrilles The Right Way
It’s the little things when it comes to having an indigo day. Wearing espadrilles that flop around and feel loose and miserable is the worst. If you tie them the proper way (yes there is actually a PROPER way don’t come for me) they’ll be more secure and comfortable for wearing all day. See the tutorial here.
Make Your Shoes Fit Perfectly
As a former Nordstrom shoes salesperson, I feel like I have a few good shoe fit tips. The biggest one has to do with any shoe that’s just a tad too big and your heel keeps slipping out. More often than not, you may think it’s best to put soemthing into the heel to make it fit perfectly. But all that does is push your foot further into the footbed making your shoe more uncomfortable. Sure your foot may not slip out, but you’re now crammed into the most narrow part of the shoe. Instead, put something in the ball of the shoe (I really like these Foot Petals for this) and then it pushes your foot BACK into the heel of the shoe. This will make your shoe fit perfectly and be more comfortable.
Get Properly Fitting Bras And Undergarments
Having a properly fitting bra is hands down the best thing you can do for yourself as a woman. I mean it. It’s game changer to have a bra that fits, lifts and feels great. I have this big post on the best bras you should own so that you’re armed with the right bras for the right outfits. Because a t-shirt bra should not be worn with that sweater. Trust me!
Same goes for undergarments. nothing is more annoying than putting on a dress and realizing you really probably need Spanx or a slip. While doing KonMari, this may be a good time to write down any undergarments you should invest in to have. The good news is, you likely don’t need much and they aren’t expensive. I recommend at least having a pair of lazy SPANX (more on that here) and a half slip at the bare minimum. Add in anything else you need for specific pieces you love. Having these on hand and ready to wear will allow you to get dressed and not have to stress!
Plan Your Outfits
This tip is both a style one and an overall life hack, but planning your outfits ahead of time will make getting dressed much easier. Whether it’s before a big trip, or the work week, getting your looks in order will take the guess work out of your mornings. Take a few photos on your phone if you need to remember which outfits you love and want to wear in the future.
Before I go to bed I decide what I’m wearing to work for the next day…down to which bra…and lay it out. Getting myself organized the night before has made my mornings so much smoother. – Kim
Ditch The Iron
I never use an iron for my clothing and have found a steamer is so much easier and faster to use. A little tip to make sure you maximize your steaming is to steam from the INSIDE of your garment. It pulls the fabric a bit as you go down making it a more effective way to steam. And no need to spend a ton of money on one. I use this one and it works just fine!
Get A Hat Clip
For when you’re heading to the beach or pool and on vacation, a hat clip is life-changing. No more carrying your hat around or wearing it when you don’t want to. This little tip will be game changer on your next warm weather getaway. I use this one from Toptote!
Tuck Your Shirt In
When in doubt, I resort to tucking a shirt, even a simple white tee, into my favorite jeans for a clean put together look. Doesn’t even matter waht shoes you pair with it, it just feels elevated in an instant. This is a perfect example of a put-together look that just includes jeans, a white tee and fun sneakers.
Add Gold Jewelry
When you add in a few layers of gold jewelry to any look, it instantly elevates your outfit and makes it appear that you tried. Take the same white tee and jeans. Add a few layered gold necklaces and gold hoops and you’re outfit just went from simple and boring, to elevated. Here’s all my favorite gold jewelry I’m always wearing. I swear it makes me feel put together that I live in it and any outfit I put on feels complete thanks to having some jewelry on.
